About Smithtown

The town of Smithtown is located on the Northern Shore of Long Island. Smithtown, settled in 1665, is said to consist of the land given to Richard Smith by the Native American chief who owned the land after Smith rescued the chief’s kidnapped daughter.

Local Legend

As legend has it, Smith bargained with the local Native Americans to purchase as much ground as he could cover in one day while riding a bull. The Indians agreed – Smith trained his bull and strategically chose the longest day of the year prior to moving forward with the deal. On the day of the trade, Smith rode the bull some 35 miles, staking claim to an area of land covering nearly 50 square miles. It is said that he stopped to eat his lunch in the valley between Smithtown and Huntington, which explains the valley’s current name, Bread and Cheese Hallow.

Town Mascot

Although the possibility that Smith rode his bull for such an incredible distance is quite unlikely, the legend has remained an important part of Smithtown’s culture for centuries. In 1941, Smith’s decedent, Lawrence Smith Butler, donated a large 14’ long by 9’ wide “Bull” statue to commemorate the legend. To date, the statue (known as the Whisper, the Bull Statue) is displayed at the intersection of Routes 25 and 25A.The bull was given the name Whisper by elementary students during a local newspaper’s contest.
