About Sayville

 Appliance Repair Sayville Oysters

Town History

Originally founded by John Edwards of East Hampton in 1761, Sayville is historically known for its thriving oyster industry. Despite the regions abundance of world class oysters during the early 19th century, English oyster hunters nearly caused complete extinction of the Blue Point oyster because of reckless harvesting. Toward the mid-19th century, Dutch settlers revived the industry through “sustained harvesting.” After several years, the oyster beds once again thrived with Blue Point oysters, which helped the region earn it’s nickname, Oyster Capital of the World. As a result of this remarkable growth, the area became a site for many grand estates, including the home of Theodore Roosevelt’s cousin, John Ellis Roosevelt.  Sayville also became known for tourism, boasting over 30 hotels, world class oysters, and the central embarkation point for the Fire Island ferry.

Contemporary Sayville Celebrities

Speaking of Oysters—Sayville is home to Melissa Joan Hart, daughter of shellfish purveyor and clam hatchery worker, William Hart. Melissa grew up in Sayville with her four other siblings. It wasn’t until her teenage years that the young actress moved into New York City. Melissa is known for her leading role in the early 90’s hit show, Clarissa Explains It All. In the mid-90’s, Melissa starred in the hit series, Sabrina, The Teenage Witch. Although her role in Sabrina, The Teenage Witch halted her attempt to earn a college degree, the young actress’ show aired for 8 years on cable TV. Sayville is also home of American Journalist Joseph Michael Jahn. Jahn is most commonly known for his role as the first full-time rock and roll journalist for the New York Times.
