About Long Island

Photo by and propert of Brian Griesbaum of icaliber.com | Fleet Appliance repairLong Island, NY, is the largest island in the contiguous United States and one of its most populated districts. It is comprised of 4 counties, 2 of which (Kings and Queens County) make up part of New York City’s Five Boroughs. The other 2 easternmost counties, Nassau and Suffolk, are suburban districts colloquially considered to be the heart of Long Island.

Geological Breakdown

With near 8 million people, Long Island’s population makes it the most populated island in any US territory, and the 17th most populous in the world. It reaches 118 miles from the southern most point of New York State into the Atlantic Ocean. The Outer Barrier Islands divide the southern lagoons from the Atlantic Ocean and consist of many popular destinations including Coney and Fire islands. The North Shore borders Long Island Sound, across which lies Connecticut.

Short History

Long Island was inhabited by the Metoac tribes when Europeans landed in the 17th century. The English occupied the eastern portion of Long Island while the Dutch claimed the west. The tribes played an important part in the trade economy for early settlers, but disease and conflict quickly decimated the Natives. The English then claimed the entirety of Long Island until the Revolutionary War, when it became the site of the largest battle of the war and fell under the control of British forces. Finally, it was retaken and made part of the newborn American union.

Landmarks

Two the nation’s largest airports, LaGuardia and JFK, can be found on Long Island making it a popular hub for international travelers. It is also home to one of New York’s most prestigious universities, Stony Brook University. The Brooklyn Bridge, the oldest suspension bridge in the US, crosses from Kings County into Manhattan. In Calverton, aqua enthusiasts enjoy one of the nation’s best water parks, Splish Splash. As part of New York City, Long Island is one of the few places in the world that can claim to offer just about anything one could ask for.

Fleet Appliance Corporation is proud to be a part of the Long Island community. There is so much more about Long Island that we cannot cover here, so, to see more, visit DiscoverLongIsland.com and LongIsland.com.
