About Hampton Bays

Hampton Bays, long recognized by its allure and charm, is situated between the Shinnecock Bay, Peconic Bay, and the Atlantic Ocean. The area is surrounded by sandy dunes, beaches, marshlands, and streams. Swarming with wild life and beautiful nature, Hampton Bays has a unique atmosphere that screams “tranquility and adventure”.

Great West Bay Lighthouse

Built on Ponquogue point facing Shinnecock Bay in 1857, the Great West Bay Lighthouse (AKA Shinnecock Lighthouse) stood tall at 168 feet. Had the lighthouse not been switched out for a skeleton tower, it would have been one of the tallest lighthouses in the United States. In 1937 President Teddy Roosevelt declared the area in which the lighthouse stood a sanctuary and breeding ground for migratory birds and wildlife. The lighthouse was demolished in 1948, to the great displeasure of the community, due to political pressure.

Canoe Place Inn

The Canoe Place in served as a lodge to British Officers during the time of the American Revolution. Its location – tucked snugly between the Shinnecock and Peconic Bays – over looked the main road of the town and. In 1921 the Inn burned down in a fire and was rebuilt with the addition of a ballroom, which reflected the culture of the roaring 20’s.  New York State Governor Al Smith visited the Inn for 30 years and is credited for being one of the first people to dance in the ballroom. Now, people of Hampton Bays are fighting to preserve the Inn which has been turned into a run down nightclub.
