About Coram

Coram is one of Long Island’s oldest settlements, believed to be named after an Indian inhabitant from long ago. For over a century Brookhaven officials held meetings in Coram’s Davis Town Meeting House. This made it a popular site for political debate. General George Washington was even said to have dined in Coram while touring Long Island after the close of the Revolutionary War. It’s this kind of history that gives Coram its unique character.

Mott House | Fleet Appliance repairSatterly Tavern

Coram was at one time little more than a few plots of land bisected by a road between New York and Riverhead. Taking note of the substantial amount of travel passing through the area, William Satterly petitioned to establish a tavern in the area sometime in the mid-1600’s. His request was granted and he built his establishment along the road passing through his 100 acre plot. The passing travelers earned him some coin, but the area would not truly develop for decades.

Davis Town Meeting House

The good natured people of Coram have always loved a good debate. Until 1885 they hosted Brookhaven town meetings in Coram’s Davis House, and they weren’t unknown to become raucous scenes. Frank L. Tooker describes either side “uniformly voting against each other on general principles” while vendors of food and drink gather around to profit from throats shouted sore and energy depleted in fury. But despite the scene, Tooker notes that these events were “not without its good-nature and even picturesque sides”, a passionate yet balanced attitude characteristic of the community.
