About Brookhaven

Brookhaven is one of the ten primary towns of Suffolk County. It was purchased from native Algonquins and its borders still match that of the original Setauket and Unkechaug tribes. Proximity to extensive bays and access to the Atlantic profited the naval industry throughout history, from the time of the natives to the English settlement that followed, even as far as today with its still-popular oyster production. Famous hamlets within Brookhaven include:

Yaphank, base of historical Camp Upton

“With World War I in full swing by 1917, the US had great need of training facilities for its soldiers. They built a base in Yaphank called Camp Upton after Civil War general Emory Upton of the Union Army. It was used as a boot camp for new recruits and processed one of the US’s most decorated soldiers of the conflict, Alvin York. After the first war, it became an education center for foreign-born recruits but was later reactivated for WWII. When that war ended, ownership was transferred to the Brookhaven National Laboratory, and the site now hosts research for the US Department of Energy.”

Blue Point Oysters | Fleet Appliance repair

Blue Point, famous for tasty Blue Point Oysters

“These oysters were once a delicacy so prized that they were said to have been sailed across the sea for Queen Victoria of England, who favored them above all others.

Blue Point Oysters were seeded off the hamlet’s tip by Joseph Avery sometime around the 1800’s. By 1824, they were so favored that New Yorkers had already practically extinguished the supply in the Blue Point region. Other catches from the bay were then referred to as Blue Point oysters to capitalize on the appeal, but they are said to taste different than the original. The Great South Bay is still a leading supplier of Long Island seafood, however it just may be that the legendary flavor of the short-lived Blue Point oyster is now lost to history.”
